Bachelor of Arts Majoring in Music

On this page you will find information on:

Introduction

While the NZSM does not offer its own BA with a major in Music,

  • students taking the BA in Music at Massey University may include NZSM papers as part of their degree
  • students taking the BA in Music Studies at Victoria University may enrol in NZSM papers

The Massey BA in Music

Massey University offers the only New Zealand BA major in Music which can be taken extramurally. Extramural students receive study material (handbooks, CDs) and most papers offer a two-day campus course which is highly recommended but not compulsory.

In addition, some Massey BA music papers are offered to on-campus students at Albany, Palmerston North (Turitea) and Wellington.

If you are a Massey student wanting to credit an NZSM paper to another degree you may enrol through Massey University.

The range of Music papers available to BA and other students, is intended to cultivate skills in listening, practice and commentary. The idea behind the degree is to encourage career prospects as well as personal development.

The BA major consists of 150 Massey points in Music, including 15 credits at 100-level; at least
30 credits at 200-level; and at least 60 credits at 300-level. Not all papers in the programme may be available in any given year: papers above 100-level are normally offered in a bi-annual rotation basis. Although these papers have Massey University paper codes they are taught by NZSM staff.

For enquiries regarding the undergraduate certificate (CertArts) with endorsement in Music, or the graduate diploma (GradDipArts) in Music, see the University Calendar or contact Associate Professor Robert Hoskins:
Telephone: +64 6 356 9099 ext 7153
Email: r.h.hoskins@massey.ac.nz

Both the certificate and diploma qualifications are drawn from the BA schedule of music papers.
