Glossary of NZSM Academic Terms
| Dissertation |
The exegesis of the research undertaken by a postgraduate student
, also known as thesis at Massey. |
| EFTS |
The value of the programme normally taken by a student in a year – 1
EFTS = 120 points at NZSM and Victoria. At Massey 1 EFTS= 100 points. |
| Extramural |
A paper or programme available by off-campus delivery, also known as distance
delivery at Victoria. |
| Level |
The stage of study within a programme at which a paper is offered, 100 level
= first year degree level NB at NZSM and Victoria 400 level = BMus(Hons) papers
and 500 level = Masters. At Massey 400 and 500 are reserved for the 4th and 5th
years of some Bachelors degrees. |
| Paper |
The individual unit of study in which a student enrols. This is also known
as course at Victoria. |
| Paper
Co-ordinator |
The academic staff member with overall responsibility for the delivery of
a paper, including preparation of the paper outline, moderation of assessment,
and ensuring grades are submitted on time. |
| Points |
The numerical value of a paper 1 EFTS = 120 points at NZSM and Victoria. Points
are sometimes known as credits. |
| Programme |
The overall qualification(s) that a student is completing, e.g., the Graduate
Diploma in Music. |
| Programme Leader |
The academic staff member who has overall responsibility for a disciplinary
area such as Musicology. |
| Programme Director |
The academic staff member who has overall responsibility for a particular
qualification such as the Master of Music Therapy. |
| Specialisation |
The principal area of study within a programme, e.g., Jazz Performance within
the BMus(Hons). This is also known as a major at Massey. |
| Statute |
The formal academic requirements for a programme of study, also known at Massey
as regulations. |
| Trimester |
One of three periods of study (February to June, July to November, December
to February) in the academic year. Massey has two semesters and summer school. |
